If you have ever seen a post hole digger on a tractor, you know what a helical pier looks like. A helical pier (or anchor or pile) is an extendable deep foundation system with helical bearing plates welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the soil through these bearing plates. Helical piers are turned into the ground like a corkscrew. Once the desired depth and resistance (torque) are met, the pier is then bracketed to the center of your foundation wall. This transfers the weight of your home far below your foundation and out of the active, moving soil zone.
Installation can be done from the inside or outside of the foundation and can take as little as a day.
Helical pier sizing, specifications and placement are dictated by a licensed third party structural engineer. We are happy to refer you to one of the many engineers we work with every day.
